Scarlet Oak
Quercus coccinea

The scarlet oak is often found on dry forest ridges and hillsides, commonly with other types of oaks. It is also a popular park, yard and street tree due to its drought resistance, the excellent shade it offers, and its brilliant red fall foliage. The tree often forms a swollen, highly figured base, as you can see on this specimen.
This handsome scarlet oak is registered as a Baltimore County Champion at the MD Big Tree Program, Airtable – Tree Listings on Website. It has a circumference of 14’ 4” with a vertical height of 111’. If you look to the left, you will see another beautiful scarlet oak next to the playground.
More information on scarlet oaks can be found online or in one of the many tree books available at your library.
