Red Maple
Acer rubrum
The red maple is the most common maple found in Maryland and one of the most common trees in the Eastern U.S. They are found in a variety of habitats, even wet ones. They don’t mind getting their “feet” wet which is why they are abundant along both sides of this trail, often near wetlands.
There is always something “red” about this tree in every season. In early spring, its red flowers and samaras, high up in the leafless tree, give the tree’s canopy an overall red cast. Walking along the Red Trail, you can often pick them out.
As you pass this tree during the year, look for something else “red” on it. Maybe it will only be red petioles attaching the leaves to the twigs. Perhaps it will be its red leaves in autumn. In winter, look for the reddish-brown twigs on the leafless tree. The red maple!!
