The post oak is often found in sandy or rocky soil, like in the nearby serpentine barrens. There, these trees are small and scrubby. Perhaps this is a case where a squirrel or blue jay picked up a post oak acorn in the serpentine barrens and buried it in better soil nearby. Hence, this lovely Baltimore County Champion tree! The post oak is most recognizable by its cross-shaped leaf. See if you can find the leaves on the ground below the tree. If you can, feel their thick, leather-like texture, which helps them withstand the dry conditions of their environment.
