Black Walnut

The black walnut is a tree of the riparian forest, the area adjacent to rivers and other bodies of water. They are commonly found along the Jones Falls and Roland Run in this park. Look for them along the Blue and Red Trails.

The tree has dark, deeply furrowed bark. The leaves are compound, meaning each leaf has multiple smaller leaflets. Perhaps the most common way of identifying them is finding their large green husk covered nuts on the ground. Looking up in the tree, you will see more walnuts and long leaves with 20 or more small leaflets.

The stout branches high in the tree are needed to hold the long compound leaves and the heavy walnuts. The large nuts, which ripen in the fall, are consumed by wildlife.
