Bigleaf Magnolia

The bigleaf magnolia may have the most telling name of all trees. It is a BIG leaf. If you are lucky enough to see this tree with its large fragrant flowers, you will know it’s a magnolia.

The tree seems more suited for the tropics but here it is at Lake Roland. It is native to Kentucky and North Carolina, south to the Gulf of Mexico. There is a large stand of bigleaf and closely related umbrella magnolias in a ravine on the Purple Trail.
